Growth factors<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>

1 - Definition<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Growth factors are low molecular weight, fragile and specific proteins that act as chemical messengers between different cell types. These proteins are secreted into the extracellular environment, activating or inhibiting the growth and multiplication of cells, particularly fibroblasts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>

2 - Mode of action<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Growth factors act on their target cells in different ways: sometimes they act on the cell membrane, sometimes on the cell nucleus. They can either stimulate division of the cell that produces them (autocrine stimulation), or stimulate growth of another cell (paracrine stimulation), or exert their action over the whole organism via the blood (endocrine stimulation).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

The growth factor, the first messenger, first binds to a specific chemical molecule, the receptor. Activated in this way, the receptor triggers the synthesis of another chemical molecule, the second messenger.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

3 - Different types<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

EGF<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>epidermal growth factor<\/i><\/span><\/span>) acts on epidermal cells.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0FGF<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>fibroblast growth factor<\/i><\/span><\/span>) stimulate the proliferation of many cell types<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>TGF-\u03b2<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>transforming growth factor beta<\/i><\/span><\/span>) stimulates the proliferation of certain cells, inhibits it in others, and controls the differentiation of certain cells:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

  • It stimulates the production of collagen and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • It increases fibronectin synthesis: the name of a class of glycoproteins present in the extracellular matrix (ECM), which plays a key role in cell adhesion<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

  • It inhibits the degradation of ECM<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0PDGF<\/i><\/span><\/span>or platelet-derived growth factor (<\/span><\/span>platelet-derived growth factor<\/i><\/span><\/span>), necessary for fibroblast division. IL has receptors on the fibroblast plasma membrane:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

    • When it associates with its receptor, it stimulates cell division.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    • Stimulates angiogenesis<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    • Promotes wound healing<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      \u00a0The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0GF-IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>insulin like growth factor<\/i><\/span><\/span>) are cytokines that stimulate cell metabolism and cell proliferation:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

      • They stimulate the proliferation of activated T lymphocytes. (IL-2)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

      • They improve wound healing. (IL-3)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

      • They act on the immune system. (IL-2)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

      • They regulate cellular homeostasis. (IL-7)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/li>

        Cell aging<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

        Our bodies are made up of a multitude of cells that age and deteriorate over time. Dermal fibroblasts are responsible for skin quality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

        As a result of the reduction in fibroblast numbers, collagen production and growth factor concentration are reduced.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

        The skin loses around 1% of fibroblasts, corresponding to 1% of thickness loss each year. The rate of decline in fibroblast number and function is increased by sun exposure.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

        Recent studies have also shown that sun-damaged skin has 35 % fewer blood capillaries than normal skin, so it receives less nutrients and oxygen than normal healthy skin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

        Our cells can be stimulated by growth factors which, along with stem cells, are one of the pillars of regenerative medicine. The stem cells present in all our organs are just waiting for a signal from growth factors to differentiate and repair tissues damaged, for example, by aging.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

        Topical application of growth factors in aesthetic medicine<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

        Growth factors can also be used locally. This involves using a formula containing only these substances, in high, specific concentrations, targeting the skin and hair for greater efficacy.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>
